The Last Contract is a thriller about the assassination of the Swedish prime minister Oluf Palme.
Policeman Roger Nyman would like to get away from working in the streets so he accepts an offer to transfer to the secret police. By chance he comes upon a plan to kill the prime minister, but even though a professional contract killer has recently arrived in Sweden, his superiors do not seem to take Nyman's warnings very seriously.
As the outcome of the story is already known to us, the story becomes less of a nerve-racking race against time than it could have been. Nevertheless it is a fine example of the Swedes' ability to combine the thriller genre with everyday realism.
