The Dogme-film Italian for Beginners is a charming romantic comedy about lonely and insecure people and their quiet search for love and friendship in a dreary, provincial suburb. The director is not afraid to deal with serious matters, which adds to the credible realism of the film.
The main characters in Lone Scherfig's film take evening classes in Italian, probably as a way of forming friendships and escaping loneliness. The awkward and self-effacing Jørgen Mortensen desperately wants to be able to communicate with the beautiful Italian waitress Giulia. Another participant is the shy Olympia who is bullied by her choleric father.
