Happiness is about a middle-class family, Lenny and Mona Jordan, who are getting a divorce, and their three grown-up daughters Joy, Helen and Trish. Joy is a loser, at least that is what her family think. Helen is a writer and maneater who is getting fed up with success. Trish is married to Bill, a psychiatrist, who takes a fancy to his son's friends. The characters in Happiness are not happy, but they try to find happiness.
As in his breakthrough movie "Welcome to the Dollhouse" Todd Solondz presents us with his unpleasant and cynic version of suburbia, which he mocks with his wry, black humour. In spite of its satiric elements the movie borders on tragedy.
