Fucking Åmål

Åmål is a small town far from the pulsating city life. Too far in 14-year-old Elin's opinion. She lives in Åmål and curses it. Elin is a popular girl among both sexes in spite of - or maybe because of her daring and rebellious behaviour. The other main character is Agnes, still a friendless stranger in Åmål although it has been quite a while since her family moved there.
Life becomes even more intolerable for Agnes when it is rumoured that she is a lesbian and in love with Elin, but then things change.
Fucking Åmål is a tender and humourous film about the pain of growing up and shaping one's own identity. The development of Agnes' and Elin's sexual identities are part of that theme. Its visuals are quite crude, which makes the film seem even more realistic. Director and screenwriter Lukas Moodysson has really captured modern teenage life.
