Apt Pupil

Apt Pupil is a very unpleasant movie because it is relentless in its exposure of mankind's weaknesses.
Todd Bowden is the apt pupil, but his interest in the Nazis' extermination of the Jews develops into an obsession.
When Todd recognizes Kurt Dussander, a former concentration camp commandant in a bus, he looks him up and blackmails the old man into telling stories about the camps. To begin with Todd has the upper hand, but Dussander knows a few tricks from his time as a Nazi.
The power struggle between Todd and Dussander is fascinating, but almost 2 hours is too long a running time, especially because the characters are too one-dimensional.
I admire the director's courage because he has dared making a Hollywood film which deals with such heavy subjects and whose main characters are unsympathetic. Who are we to identify with?
