David is a teenager who is an ardent fan of the old 50s TV-series Pleasantville, which is about the life in an idyllic and harmonious town where problems are virtually nonexistent. One night he and his twin sister Jennifer are sucked into this fictional universe and turned into Bud and Mary Sue Parker, central characters in the series. They choose very different ways to react to this weird situation.
Pleasantville is an imaginative and beautiful allegory of the Fall of Man that includes a lot of themes, maybe even too many, e.g. culture gaps and racism. It is also a celebration of the diversity of life.
Director and scriptwriter Gary Ross uses the contrast between black/white and colours in an ingenious and poetic way.
