Pan takes place in the late 19th century in the northern part of Norway far away from the madding crowd. There the newly arrived young lieutenant, Glahn, meets and falls in love with Edvarda Mack, the daughter of the richest man in town. For a short while they are happy together, but all of a sudden their love turns into a psychological battle.
The problem with Pan is that the main characters' motives are inaccessible to the audience. Must one really read the novel behind the film to fully understand the complexity of the relationship between Glahn and Edvarda?
