Never Been Kissed is a romantic comedy with chubby Drew Barrymore in a part that apparently has been tailor-made for her.
Barrymore is Josie Geller, a copy editor on the Chicago Sun-Times, who gets the chance to show what she is worth, when she is handed an assignment as an undercover reporter at a high school.
Josie's boss wants her to hang out with the smart set, but as Josie is the essence of all that is uncool and awkward that is a bit of a problem. To her regret, Josie realizes that the past seems to be repeating itself: she is just as unpopular now as she was when she was a true high school student. The only one who seems to be smitten by her clumsy charm and unmistakable intelligence is Sam Coulson, her English teacher.
Just like the satirical "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" Never Been Kissed criticizes the warped worship of popularity in the American school system. It is too bad that the film ends in the overly sentimental and crowd-pleasing mode.
