Review
This complex and enticing melodrama deals with female relationships and motherhood. Even though Pedro Almodóvar strikes a more serious and mature note in Todo sobre mi madre (All about My Mother) than in his earlier films, the world of the film is still inhabited by rather bizarre characters.
Manuela, who is a single mother, and her son Esteban celebrates his 17th birthday by watching the actress Huma Rojo in "A Streetcar Named Desire". An important motif in the film is the relationship and parallels between life, theatre and film.
After the play Manuela and Esteban wait for Huma to get her autograph. When Huma takes a taxi, Esteban follows it and is hit by a car. Esteban dies. Manuela leaves Madrid to start all over again, but her past will not let go of her.
