The title 54 is also the name of the most fashionable and notorious nightclub in New York in the late 70s and the early 80s. More than any of the characters the nightclub Studio 54 is the centre of focus.

Because of his good looks 19-year-old Shane is hired by Steve Rubell, the owner of 54. Shane moves in with his co-worker Greg and Greg's wife, Anita, who is also part of the staff at 54. Like everybody else at 54 the three of them dream of fame and wealth.

Director and scriptwriter Mark Christopher seems to have been so preoccupied with the extravagant set pieces at the nightclub that he has forgotten to write any story of significance and make his characters even remotely interesting.
