Telling Lies in America

Telling Lies in America takes place in Cleveland in 1960. Karchy Jonas is a loser. His family is poor; he is not doing well in high school; he is even bullied; and as he was born and has lived part of his life in Hungary, he still cannot pronounce 'th' right.

Diney, Karchy's co-worker, agrees to date him if he becomes the high-school student of the week on the popular DJ Billy Magic's radio show. To obtain his goal, Karchy is willing to do everything, even cheat. He not only wins the contest, he is also employed as Billy Magic's well-paid right-hand man although Billy Magic clearly suspects Karchy of cheating. What are Billy Magics reasons for hiring exactly this boy?

Small film with excellent performances by Kevin Bacon as the unscrupulous DJ, Calista Flockhart as the desillusioned Diney and Brad Renfro as Karchy.
