As in her other 90s' movies Norwegian director Berit Nesheim focuses on the world of a teenage girl, but it lacks the humour of her first feature film.
The main character in Beyond the Sky is 12-year-old Mari who is constantly at odds with everybody.
Mari befriends the retired schoolteacher Miss Rebekka Kjær who hides a romantic, yet tragic secret. Rebekka lets Mari into the secret and the reason for her bitterness. Focusing on somebody else's problems causes Mari to forget her anger and her own problems.
