El Mariachi is a playful, if violent action thriller which gives just as good value for money as the best Hollywood productions. This is extraordinary as the film was shot with a minimal budget. Apart from the acting Robert Rodriguez has done almost everything himself: the directing, the camerawork, the screenwriting, the editing, you name it.
The film, which is in Spanish, takes place in a small Mexican border town where the mariachi, a professional guitar player, arrives in search of work. He is mistakenly taken for Azul, an escaped gangster, who usually wears black and carries his weapons in a guitar case. So does the young stranger so suddenly he finds himself pursued by several men with big guns.
