Livet är en schlager is a feel-good comedy about Mona, an ardent fan of the stars in the European Song Contest. As the wife of an unemployed idler and the mother of four small daughters - and with a full-time job to boot - it is no wonder that Mona dreams about becoming a celebrity, but who would have guessed that her dream may come true?

When David, one of the disabled patients Mona takes care of, composes a song, Mona writes the lyrics and records the song. Without David knowing it she enters it into the competition in the National Song Contest.

The screenwriter's attempt at showing us that outsiders like the handicapped David and Mona's transvestite brother, a stereotype if there ever was one, are human beings too is simply over the top.
