The Yards is a realistic gangstermovie, which does not glorify crime or the criminals.
Leo Handler has just served time for car-theft and now he wants to live an honest life. He should probably get an education, but he would rather work for his Uncle Frank just as his friend Willie does. Willie makes lots of money.
Frank's company Electric Rail is one of the leading subway companies in New York, but what Leo does not know is that Frank uses corruption, violence and sabotage in order to stay in business.
One night a sabotage mission goes completely wrong. A man is killed, another is unconscious, and Leo gets the blame. Unless he acts, his life will be in danger.
Mark Wahlberg's Leo is the main character of the film, but he is rather annonymous and inscrutable. That makes it hard to identify with him. Is he naive or just plain stupid? You cannot read it from his face.
