The Story of Us

The Story of Us is a somewhat disappointing marital drama. Katie and Ben are a married couple in crisis. She is a control freak, and he is still an overgrown child who takes things as they come. When their two teenage children go off to summer camp, Ben moves out. They are still wavering, however, and do not dare tell the children the truth. Meanwhile, the children's dentist is making heavy advances towards Katie, but does she not actually still love Ben?

There is not much plot in the film. Instead it is episodic, with a series of flashbacks to Katie and Ben's past, showing why they got together in the first place and what problems they have struggled with.

Ben and Katie come very close to divorce, but in the facile ending they decide to stay together after all. The film never becomes particularly gripping, as one is never left in any doubt that Ben and Katie still love each other. The scratches in the paintwork are only superficial, but even so the happy ending cannot help seeming rather tacked on.
