Mondays in the Sun

Mondays in the Sun is a low-key realistic drama about a group of middle-aged unemployed men who are trying to find some substance in their existence and some kind of meaning in life after being laid off from the shipyard, which had to close. They live in a small provincial town where not a great deal happens and the chances of getting a job are close to zero. Now and then they make a trip to the city to look for work, but since none of them succeeds, despondency slowly spreads. Naturally family life suffers too.

Mondays in the Sun is told at a slightly too sedate pace, and the film offers no great drama. Its strength is its powerful realism and its disarming humour in the midst of despair.
