The Mothman Prophecies

The Mothman Prophecies is a supernatural chiller about the successful Washington Post journalist John Klein, who sets out to investigate a series of mysterious and seemingly inexplicable events in the small provincial town of Point Pleasant. How John strays into the little town far off the beaten track is no less mysterious, but when he discovers a connection between the locals' strange experiences and his wife's death after a traffic accident two years earlier, he stays on in the town. After the tragedy John found among his wife's belongings a series of sketches of a sinister winged creature that she may have seen before the accident. It turns out that several of Point Pleasant's residents have seen something similar.

The story in The Mothman Prophecies is rather convoluted, and there are several loose ends, but at least some of them are tied up in the film's striking ending. The atmospheric use of sound and image goes a long way towards making it just about possible to accept the story with all its implausibilities.
