Review

Orfeu Negro ("Black Orpheus") is a lyrical and colourful version of the Greek myth about Orpheus and Eurydice. French director Marcel Camus' film is set in Rio de Janeiro during the carnival.

Eurydice, a country girl, arrives in Rio where her cousin Serafina lives. The purpose of her stay is to escape her mysterious persecutor. It's almost love at first sight when Eurydice meets the popular bus conductor Orfeo, but unfortunately Orfeo is already betrothed to the lively Mira. The action explodes during the carnival.

Vivacity and high spirits are cleverly contrasted with the tragic content of the film.
