At the beginning of this decade serial killers were all the fashion on film.Kalifornia is trendy. It not only has a vicious serial killer as a main character; obviously director Dominic Sena has been giving a lot of attention to the aesthetics of the film as well.
Brian and Carrie, a smart, young couple, decide to pursue their careers in California. On the way Brian wants to visit some famous murder sites and do some research for his book about serial killers, and Carrie, who is a photographer, agrees to take the pictures. Like everybody else Brian only knows about serial killers in theory, but before long he gets to know more about serial killers than he ever dreamed about - in his worst nightmares.
Brian and Carrie can't afford to pay for the gas all by themselves, so they advertise for another couple to come along. They end up with Adele and Early, the epitome of white trash. Brian tries to meet them with an open mind, but Carrie is sceptical. No wonder!
Kalifornia is an unpleasant film to watch, but I was caught up in the story. The rough plot is quite ingenious. Unfortunately not all the main characters are succesfully realized. Early's figure is too stereotypical, and Brian and Carrie are cardboard characters; they do not get human until the end.
