At the international film festival in Cannes in 1995 the Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica was awarded the Golden Palms for Underground.
Underground is a black and surrealist comedy about two friends, Marko and Petar, a couple of unscrupulous opportunists who always find a way to get the best out of life. It is also a story about a country that used to be, Yugoslavia.
The story begins during WW2 and ends during the civil war when the nation is going to pieces. The title of the film alludes to the fact that Petar, his friends and family live underground for several years, during the WW2 and 15 years after. Marko has told them that the Germans are still in power so that he can exploit the workers in the basement and so that he can get the girl and the glory to himself.
As a filmmaker Emir Kusturica has his own personal style. He blends reality and surrealist elements in an imaginative way, but in my view he spends too much time on telling his stories. It bores me to watch the long party sequences.
