It is noticeable that Juloratoriet (Christmas Oratorio) is an adaptation of a novel. The story spans several generations, and at times it feels as if director and screenwriter Kjell-Åke Andersson has only made room for the main events. That of course is the problem of many novel adaptations. Apart from that Juloratoriet is a drama worth watching.
After his mother's death the conductor Victor finds a pile of letters to adressed to himself. The letters are all from his father, Sidner, whom he never knew, and they tell the story of his father's life from early childhood to his travel to New Zealand as a young man. A huge influence on Sidner's life as well on Sidner's father Aron's life is Solveig, Aron's wife and Sidner's mother, who dies in a tragic accident at an early age. Even after her death her strong presence is felt.
