Sommersby

Sommersby is a beautifully photographed melodrama that is loosely based on the French movie "The Return of Martin Guerre" with Gerard Depardieu in the title role. The original had a less contrived and more credible storyline.

The story in this version is set in Tennessee after the Civil War. Efter 6 years of absence Jack Sommersby returns to his dilapidated rural estate. He returns as a new man, suddenly a loving husband and a man of enterprise. He was neither before. At least that is what his wife Laurel thinks. Has the war really caused such a huge change in Jack or has Laurel in fact reason to be suspicious?
