During a concert Jules, an 18-year-old operafan and mailman, tapes the voice of his idol, the American black soprano Cynthia Hawkins, who has never made a recording. At the same time a prostitute incriminates a corrupt chief of police on tape. The two tapes are mixed up, so suddenly Jules is both pursued by the police, gangsters and Taiwanese bootleggers.
Diva is a strange, complex and surprising thriller with a romantic subplot. Jean-Jacques Beineix creates striking visuals, but at times it seems as if he forgets his characters in favour of the stylishness of the film.
