In the 18th century a young nobleman and engineer, Ponceludon, goes to Paris in order to raise money for a drainage project. Ponceludon hopes to obtain an audience with the King, but the only way to become a success at court and get to know the right people is to be a master of wit, preferably a sarcastic and malicious kind. Ponceludon turns out to have quite a talent for this art, but can that make up for his inexperince of court life?
Ridicule is more than just an absorbing costume drama. The life at court can also be regarded as a parallel to our modern lives, in which we also take great care to keep up appearances and not to lose face.
