Review

Fistful of Flies is a slightly surreal Australian drama about the teenage girl Mars who has begun to discover her own sexuality, but her Catholic parents of Italian descent react strongly against it. They even take Mars to a doctor to cure her! The rebellion against the oppressors become a bit too heavy-handed towards the end, though.

Director and screenwriter Monica Pellizzari attacks hypocrisy and Catholic morals in a Fistful of Flies, in which the irritating flies symbolize the impurity that Mars' parents fear more than anything.

Even though Fistful of Flies is an interesting film, it might have been better off as a one-hour short film because the story is too slight for a feature.
