The title of David Lynch's new film The Straight Story not only refers to the main character, 73-year-old Alvin Straight. It is also an allusion to the fact that for the first time in many years David Lynch has directed a simple and straightforward film.
The Straight Story is a road movie, but an unusual one, because Alvin Straight travels from Iowa to Wisconsin on a lawnmower. Alvin has not been on speaking terms with his brother Lyle for many years, but when Lyle has a stroke, Alvin realizes he had better be reconciled with Lyle before it is too late. As he is too old to drive and he does not want to ask anyone to drive him the long way to Lyle's place, only one option is left: the lawnmower.
Not only Alvin drives with a snail's pace. The film itself adapts its pace to his. The tone of the film is calm and warm-hearted as we slowly become familiar with the Midwestern agricultural landscape and the mould of the Midwesteners.
