The Green Mile is an overlong adaptation of Stephen King's serialised novel. The frame story, which takes up an awful lot of time, could easily have been left out. Apart from that The Green Mile is the an almost perfect adaptation of the novel. It is a moving and poetic story mixing realism with fantastic elements.
The story takes place in 1935 on death row in a southern state prison where the main character Paul Edgecomb is a warder. John Coffey, a huge, black man, has just been convicted for two brutal murders, but he is far from your average death row inmate: he has mysterious powers.
