Claude Berri's unsentimental and moving drama about a Jewish boy sent away from Paris during WW2 to stay with a family in the country is partly autobiographic.
Because of the growing anti-Semitism Claude's parents decide to let him live with an elderly couple in a secluded place. Ironically, Claude's foster-father is extremely prejudiced against the Jews, so Claude has to pass himself off as a 'true' Frenchman and be careful not to reveal his true identity.
