Another Country is the story about Guy Bennett, an upper-class British spy who has defected to the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
In Julian Mitchell's adaptation of his own play Bennett is looking back on a formative period of his life when he was a boarder at a prestigious private school characterized by rigid and sadistic power structures and homophobia.
Bennett and his friend Tommy Judd are outsiders, Bennett because he flaunts his homosexuality and Tommy because he is a communist reading forbidden books at night.
The film gives an interesting and disturbing portrait of boarding school life in the 1930s, but the frame story seems utterly unnecessary.
