City of Angels is a remake of the German filmmaker Wim Wenders' original "Wings of Desire".
Seth is an angel walking the earth with the purpose of helping and comforting the dying who are the only ones able to actually see him. Seth is privileged because he cannot feel pain, he can read people's minds, and he is immortal. But when he falls in love with Maggie, a surgeon, he starts wondering how life as a human being could be.
Scriptwriter Dana Stevens and director Brad Silberling has turned Wenders' experimenting film into a Hollywood melodrama focusing exclusively on the love story. The film insists on moving us all to tears, maybe adding the predictable (and superfluous) ending to secure success.
Cinematographer John Seale is responsible for some magic and lyrical moments.
