Even though Galaxy Quest is modelled on the "Star Trek" series, it is not necessary to be a Trekkie, i.e. a devoted fan of the series, to enjoy this brilliant sci-fi comedy.
Even though the series Galaxy Quest is not in production anymore, James Nesmith, who played the commander of the spaceship, and his co-stars are still required to show up in full costume to meet their fans. During one of these events Mathesar, a Thermian from outer space, asks Nesmith for help believing that he is a real spaceship commander and not just a fictional character. When Nesmith realizes that Mathesar is a real alien and this is not some practical joke, he is too far involved in the battle between the friendly Thermians and Sarris, a merciless villain, to tell his new friends the truth. He needs his co-stars / crew to help him, though.
Galaxy Quest strikes a perfect balence between good-natured satire and nailbiting action.
