What Lies Beneath is both a supernatural and a psychological thriller. Alfred Hitchcock is an obvious source of inspiration for this suspenseful, though muddy story of Claire Spencer, a housewife, who appears to be happily married to the acknowledged scientist Norman Spencer. When her only daughter leaves home, her imagination starts playing tricks on her - or does it? Her rational husband refutes the existence of ghosts or spirits, but Claire is convinced that their house is haunted by a ghost with a message.
Michelle Pfeiffer is excellent as the vulnerable and nervous Claire Spencer.
