The Horse Whisperer is an entertaining romantic drama although it is much too long. In fact, a third of the length could easily have been discarded in the editing room, but Robert Redford obviously does not know the concept of "kill your darlings".
13-year-old Gracie and her horse Pilgrim are badly injured in an accident. Gracie's leg is amputated and Pilgrim barely survives. Even worse, they are both deeply wounded in their souls.
Hoping that her daughter will recover if Pilgrim does, Gracie's mother Annie asks Tom Booker to help Pilgrim. Tom, who owns a farm in Montana and knows a thing or two about horses, agrees to help Pilgrim. During that healing time Gracie and Annie stay at his ranch. While Gracie slowly comes out of her shell, Annie and Tom fall in love.
