From Here to Eternity is an impressive drama about a group of military men and their women on Hawaii just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.
Sergeant Prewitt dedicates his life to the army even though it gives him nothing but trouble in return. For instance his best friend becomes the victim of the rigid and occasionally sadistic military system, which the film indirectly criticizes.
The film also tells the story of Prewitt's love for the brothel hostess Lorene and another sergeant's affair with the captain's wife (Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr).
From Here to Eternity won 8 Oscars. That should speak for itself.
