On St. Valentine's Day 1900 a group of Australian girls from a nearby bording school have a picnic at Hanging Rock, a huge rock formation. Four girls and a teacher disappear on the rock.
If you can abstract from the fact that Picnic at Hanging Rock is not your average crime story in which the murderer is caught at the end, this film is a remarkable experience. Through his use of sound and images the director Peter Weir manages to create an enthralling atmosphere: mysterious, supernatural, languid and eerie.
