The Basketball Diaries are based on the teenage experiences of Jim Carroll, a poet and song writer, who managed to get out of a serious drug abuse.
At the beginning Jim goes to a Catholic school and plays basketball in his sparetime, but he blows his chances of getting a scholarship when he and his best friends start experimenting with drugs.
The film shows in detail what humiliations and hardships Jim must suffer, and even if The Basketball Diaries is a far cry from "Trainspotting", in which the treatment of the theme is both more shocking and innovative, it is a brutal warning against drug abuse.
