Tony Scott is a capable director of action films, but that does not compensate for the fact that The Fan looks like something we have seen before. At least it is not the first time Robert DeNiro appear as the psychopathic villain.
DeNiro plays Gil Renard, a salesman, who is sacked from the firm his father built and whose ex-wife is reluctant to let him spend time with their son, which is no wonder. Gil is obsessed with baseball. When his hero Bobby Rayburn experiences a down period, Gil kills Rayburn's rival and expects thanks. Not getting it he becomes very angry ...
If you are not particularly keen on baseball, you may get close to boredom at certain points.
