American History X is a sober and gripping drama about the nature of racism, an unpleasant subject of undiminished importance.
Derek Vinyard has just been released from prison after serving three years for killing two black burglars. It was not self-defence, though. Derek did it because of hatred. Before his stay in prison, Derek was the protegé of Cameron Alexander, the leader of a growing neo-Nazi organisation, buthe is not the same anymore. He tries to make up for his wrong deeds in the past, but can he stop what he himself started?
American History X makes the viewer feel uncomfortable because Derek while still being an ardent racist is an extremely intelligent and charismatic personality whose views sound sensible enough. Derek is not an inarticulate brute. That would have been too easy.
Edward Norton delivers an excellent performance as Derek, but also Edward Furlong excels as Derek's younger brother Danny.
American History X is a film one does not, and should not, easily forget.
