Witness is about Samuel, an 8-year-old boy, who witnesses a murder in the men's room of a railway station. Samuel and his newly widowed mother Rachel belong to the peace-loving and religious Amish people who live their lives without any modern conveniences, and it is a difficult task for John Book, a city policeman, to gain the confidence of the fearful boy and his mother.
Witness is not just an ordinary thriller and a good one at that. It is also a love story, but there is more to it. An important theme in the film is the contrast between modern life and the harmonius existence of the Amish. The scenes depicting the everyday life of the Amish are lyrical and clash effectfully with the violent action sequences.
