May 8 1937 is a historical day. On that day Hitler and Mussolini met in Rome to celebrate the unity between Nazi Germany and fascist Italy. In a suburb in Rome dominated by huge blocks of flats only two people are not taking part in the festivities. Antonietta (Sophia Loren) is a worn-out housewife and mother of six, and Gabriele (Marcello Mastroianni) is a radio host who has been sacked and is waiting for deportation to a prison because he is a homosexual. They meet by coincidence and spend the day together, a special day.
Una giornata particolare (A Special Day) is a sympathetic, but slow-paced film in which nothing much happens. Great, controlled acting from Mastroianni and Loren.
