Director James Ivory and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabwala's first adaptation of a novel by E. M. Forster is an enchanting and elegant comedy of manners that intelligently deals with Victorian morality and class distinctions.
Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) is an Edwardian maiden who goes to Florence chaperoned by her elder cousin, Charlotte (Maggie Smith). In the beautiful and romantic Italian countryside Lucy becomes attracted to the inappropriately passionate Englishman George Emerson (Julian Sands), who is not afraid to show his feelings for her, but would he make a suitable husband for a respectable young woman?
