Review

In New York the respectable English auctioneer Michael Felgate falls in love with Gina Vitale without knowing that her father Frank is a gangster. When Michael proposes to Gina, she says no because she knows that her father's mafia friends will exploit Michael's position and good connections if given the slightest opportunity.

Yet Michael is very persistent so he manages to wring out a 'yes' from Gina who tells him not to get involved with the mafia under any circumstances, but no sooner is the engagement party over than Michael finds himself trapped in the mafia's web of lies, deceit, murder and money-laundering.

This comedy, which is a bit over the top at times, finds good comical use for Hugh Grant's British accent among gangsters speaking drawling American. I still prefer Andrew Bergman's gangster comedy "The Freshman" to this one, though.
