Review
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a quiet and moving drama about a poor, Irish family who struggles to make ends meet in Brooklyn around the turn of the century. Katie and Johnny still love each other, but Johnny is a dreamer and a drunkard who is maybe too good for this world. He is a loving father and husband, but he is no good as a breadwinner.
The tree of the title is a symbol of the sheer life force of nature in a more general way and of the Nolan family.
Although the film is more than half a century old, you can still discern the qualities that the audience of 1945 found.
